Paul Roth

Graduate Teaching Consultant

Paul Nicholas Roth (he/him, from Buffalo, NY) works with interdisciplinary musicology through UCSD’s Department of Music: Integrative Studies PhD Program. His dissertation research considers sound, identity, and community arts across popular and improvised music forms, where both performance and scholarly practice function in feedback loops between one another. He’s also a committed pedagogue, teaching UC courses on speculative jazz, hip-hop history, and advanced undergraduate improvisation theory. These courses unpack racialized, gendered, and class histories in the United States through musical culture. They also support students in considering their own intersectionalities relative to structures of knowledge and power in ways that de-center white heteronormative perspective.
