Catherine Arnett

Graduate Student for ELP-ii

Catherine Arnett is a Ph.D. Student in the Linguistics Department at UCSD. Her main research relates to a particular grammatical construction in Mandarin Chinese called verbal reduplication. She is interested in using computational and experimental methods to support theoretical work on this topic. She also is interested in quantitative language typology, where she uses large-scale data sources to study how languages are similar and different to each other. Prior to working at the Engaged Teaching Hub, she has served as a TA for various Linguistics courses. Her teaching experience ranges from one-on-one tutoring, to leading discussion sections, to leading language-immersion classes featuring outdoor activities like canoeing. She has also mentored several undergraduate students from various departments during her PhD program so far. Outside of academics, she loves traveling, camping, and reading.
